An Elderberry A Day Keeps The Doctor Away

Updated: Feb 19, 2018

Elderberry syrup is a natural cold and flu preventative. We make our Elderberry syrup in small batches to maintain quality and freshness. We start with organic dried elderberries from Frontier co-op.

We use natural and organic ingredients. I prefer to make a mild version because I have small children. We tried a few versions and refined our recipe. For us, simple is better. In fact, my 2 year old has been caught "stealing" the syrup out of the fridge. He even refuses to take his dose if he realizes he got less than his much larger 15 year old brother and holds the cup out saying, "More!". Fresh organic ginger, organic cloves, organic cinnamon and raw, local honey are added to the berries and filtered water to make a great tasting syrup.

Our family has had great success avoiding and/or shortening illness by taking our daily dose. Children take 1 teaspoon daily and adults take a tablespoon. If someone is feeling puny, they increase their dose to 2-3 times a day.

Elderberries are known for their antioxidant qualities. Some users have reported lower cholesterol, improved vision, and improved circulation. Studies have shown that taking elderberry syrup reduced the severity and length of illness. In double blind tests elderberries were proven effective in treating both influenza A and B. Those that used elderberry syrup after the presence of symptoms felt relief in 2-3 days versus the 6 days of illness reported by those that took placebo. All of these wonderful benefits, with no known side effects. Elderberries were originally used by Native Americans to treat fever and respiratory illness, they aren't some new fad. It's an old remedy that's gaining popularity.
